PlatAfrica 2022 - Top 10

These earrings were designed and manufactured for the PlatAfrica competition in 2022 and made it into the Top 10.

The earrings were designed for a hypothetical client who had lost her business during the pandemic and serve as a reminder of the struggled that she faced along with her husband, yet still managed to overcome those difficult circumstances. They were designed to remind the client that anything can be overcome with the support of her husband and thath no matter what life throws at you, it is always important to support and give back to the community.

Each element of the design represents what they achieved together and how love, hope and faith prevailed in the end. The client and her husband supported a local shelter during the pandemic and in support of this endeavor, the shape of the earrings were inspired by the leaf of the logo of the California Food Bank, where they resided. Even though the client prefered a more understated look at times, she also liked classic designs with a twist. The earring can be worn two different ways, representing the more serious side of her business and the importance of still being able to express herself in her personal life.

The grading green and pink gemstones were incorporated to remind the client of her love for her husband and the times they spent together on their long walks in California where they often saw the green of the palm trees against the beautiful pink sunset backgrounds. The colours of the gemstones also transition from dark to light to dark, representing the idea that no matter how dark the current situation they are in feels, there is always hope for a better, brighter future.
